When the draft was getting close I decided I'd rather serve where I wanted. I joined the US Navy to get full benefit of the GI Bill. My first assignment was on an admiral's staff, which would have been great if not for the fact the staff was being decommissioned. I made the decision to volunteer for the submarine force. After completing Submarine School I was assigned to the USS Plunger (SSN595). I qualified in submarines earning my coveted Dolphins, the insignia of those qualified in submarines, a long involved process. I was a Torpedoman's Mate - TM3(SS) I got to visit Canada, Hawaii, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, and Pakistan. After being Honorably Discharged I returned to DePaul University.
